A civil marriage ceremony can take place in any register office in England or Wales, or at any venue that has been approved to hold a civil marriage. Approved venues include stately homes and other prestigious buildings, hotels and restaurants.
The property in which the marriage ceremony takes place need to hold a Civil Wedding Licence and many of them will also be able to provide wedding receptions.
Properties without a Civil Wedding Licence can often accommodate wedding receptions.
In Scotland religious wedding ceremonies can take place anywhere subject to the Minister being prepared to perform them.
In Northern Ireland, since 1st January 2004, as a result of a change in the law, Civil weddings can take place in approved venues as well as registry offices.
